New electric cars 2025 UK: the most exciting new EV models on sale

More than 1.3 million electric cars are now on the roads in the UK, accounting for one of every five new cars registered.

There’s never been a better time to make the switch either, with new electric car models constantly being released offering more space, more range and more technology, no matter your budget.

That gives drivers wanting to upgrade their electric car more choice than ever and as we head into 2025, even more exciting new electric cars are on the horizon.

Here we’ll take a look at some of the best new electric cars coming in 2025 – most with their sights set on overhauling the Tesla Model Y as best-seller.

Hyundai IONIQ 9

The seven-seater: Hyundai IONIQ 9

The Kia EV9 has already been a huge hit (it was crowned 2024 World Car of the Year after all) and now its sister brand, Hyundai, is releasing the IONIQ 9 – about the same size but a slighter sleeker version of the boxy EV9. The huge family SUV will offer almost 400 miles of range, space for seven across three rows of seats and super-fast charging when it goes on sale in mid 2025.

The supercar: Maserati MC20 Folgore

Maserati has a long history of thrilling performance cars and now it’s fitting electric power into the MC20. The MC20 Folgore EV production car will be officially revealed in 2025 but we’re expecting it to push 1,000bhp, a top speed of near 200mph and 0-60mph in around two seconds. With performance like that, the miles of range you’ll get it pretty irrelevant. All we know is you’ll have enough to enjoy life behind the steering wheel.

Renault 5 E-Tech

The retro icon: Renault 5 E-Tech

The Renault 5 was one of the most iconic small cars from the 70s to 90s and now its back as a chic EV. The cool design and low cost of the E-Tech are faithful to the original but this is definitely a car for the 21st century. The Renault 5 is a supermini designed for life in the city but with a range well over 200 miles, great in-car tech and decent space, it’s versatile enough to work for weekends away, too. It’s also an affordable electric car.

The luxury SUV: Range Rover Electric

From royalty to footballers and every A-list celebrity in between, the Range Rover has been the go-to choice for decades. Now, it’s entering a electric age with the Range Rover Electric. Promising no compromise on performance, practicality or luxury compared to its petrol- or diesel-powered model, the electric version will have ultra-fast charging, an estimated range of 400 miles and wading capability to rival the legendary Defender. All this doesn’t come cheap through, with an expected price tag of around £150,000 for the electric Range Rover when it goes on sale in 2025.

The credit cruncher: Volkswagen ID.2

Volkswagen promised an affordable electric car a few years ago and in 2025 you’ll finally be able to order it. The Volkswagen ID.2 (think of it as an electric VW Polo) will offer range between 200-300 miles depending on spec, have space for even a small family and be priced from around £20,000. That combination could make the supermini one of the most popular new EVs. And if you want something a little sportier and can’t wait for the ID.2 GTI, then the Cupra Raval is built on same platform and is therefore nearly identical but with more style and performance.

The family SUV: BYD Sealion 7

We’ve had the Funky Cat, Seal and Dolphin… now meet the Sealion. It’s the latest animal kingdom model from BYD that’s taking direct aim at the Tesla Model Y and the vast number of other affordable electric SUVs on sale. Range is around 300 miles (depending on spec), the interior is packed with technology (including a 15-inch rotating screen), plenty of rear seat space and there’s a 520-litre boot. It goes on sale in 2025 and will be cheaper than most rivals.

Jaguar Type 00 concept car side profile

And the one everyone’s talking about… Jaguar GT

Ok, so this doesn’t go on sale until 2026 but it’s the concept car that just broke the internet alongside Jaguar’s rebrand. And 2025 is when we’ll see the official version of the Type 00 concept – a four-door GT on a bespoke EV platform, with a £130,000-plus price tag, over 400 miles of range and supersonic charging speeds. If they pull it off, it’ll be one of the best electric cars on sale.
